Vulture Productions takes to the stage at Masambe Theatre - book at Webticket outlets!
Chenal Kock and Jeremeo Le Cordeur are
two young and inspired performing artists in Cape Town. Together they formed a
Vulture Productions duo, where their triple-feature show of 30mins each is
playing at the Masambe Theatre (Baxter Theatre) until 28 December 2019: Jerry, an Unconventional Hero, Dude Wa’s My Bakkie and Mama. So as julle nie planne hettie vir
Desember nie, is hierrie drie shows die perfekte kans vir julle om goodbye vir
2019 te sê!
Both Chenal and Jeremeo are tertiary
educated performing artists from City Varsity and Stellenbosch University, who
graduated with scriptwriting, performing and directing skillsets. Both of them
have completed the Brouhaha artist residency in the UK, where they represented
the Artscape Theatre and collaborated with several international theatre
groups. In 2019, we were also pleasantly surprised to discover them at the
David Kramer Musical Masterclass program at the Baxter Theatre, a course that
proved to be a theatrical catalyst for many of its participants!
All three shows tell very personal
stories about significant events of their lives via the medium of monodrama,
poetry, storytelling and multimedia. See below a summary of this triple
feature!
JERRY, AN UNCONVENTIONAL HERO
Written & Performed by: Jeremeo Le Cordeur Director: Ian Van der Westhuizen Choreography: Lee Roodt
Jerry, a young IT nerd, is under interrogation for allegedly stealing money
that magically appeared in a pizza box in the family house. Him and his brother
Dean are kept hostage by a villain who, by the end of the story, we discover
has returned to the house for a personal vendetta. The story is told from the
perspective of Jerry, who steps out of his comfort zone and takes charge as the
hero of the day.
Written & Performed by: Jeremeo Le Cordeur Director: Dean Van der Ventel Choreography: Lee Roodt Stel Ontwerp: Gaerin Hauptfleisch
After a short interlude, the story of the two brothers reappears here again from the perspective of Dean as he celebrates his 21st birthday, and receives a “splinternuwe second hand Nissan bakkie” as a gift. Upon an interesting use of audience participation (die skrywer van Cultsha Kennis was selfs genoem as a chosen character innie show!) and a love letter later, Dean shockingly discovers that his bakkie is missing.
MAMA
Written & Performed by: Chenal Kock Director: Jeremeo
Le Cordeur
Choreography: Alfonzo Freemantle & Yaseen Manuel
Choreography: Alfonzo Freemantle & Yaseen Manuel
Described as a “mixed but not fixed” artist, Chenal cleverly uses combinations of theatre and poetry to unpack the concept of Mama – motherhood and womanhood – and what the #MaakVirMama recipe ingredients are. She also unpacks key themes from her poetry bible relating to lineage and personal growth (a similar concept in Rupi Kaur’s milk and honey poetry collection!). Parts of her performance also includes a comparison between the terms we use to refer to our parents and caregivers (“Mama” and “Mother”), where she uses her hands to denote the social hierarchies attached to both. The show is a tribute to her mother, Margaret Kock, who passed on this year.
Thank you to Chenal Kock and Jeremeo Le
Cordeur from Vulture Productions
for the opportunity to attend and review this show on Cultsha Kennis. All photography and images used here belongs to Vulture Productions. These
shows are playing until 28 December 2019,
with a short break in between for Christmas and Boxing Day. Tickets available at
Webticket outlets.
