Tagore’s Opens its Doors for Poetry Grounding Sessions Round 2!

Last night, poets of all kinds once again united from all over Cape Town to participate in the second round of a series of Poetry Grounding Sessions at Tagore’s Observatory, the theme for the night being ‘Human Rights/Human Writes’ and featured the well-loved poet Siphokazi Jonas!

Grounding Sessions was initiated by Performance Poet Rochѐ Kester, who created these open-mic sessions for fellow poetry-lovers to share in the love for this art. “I felt that poetry can only be found in very limited places around Cape Town. With the re-launch of Grounding Sessions, I aimed to create a consistent space where poetry is always accessible,” she says. “I also see it as an opportunity for other poets to share their work, whether they are active artists in the sphere of performance, or alternatively poets who write privately but seek a platform to share their writing.”

A few poets share their experiences of performing at Grounding Sessions:

∙ Michaelangelo Abrahams, Belhar: “Die vibe innie crowd was baie intimate. ‘n Mens kan voel die lifelikke atmosphere innie kamer wanneer dit tyd was om te perform.”

∙ Roxzanne Amelia Mentoor, Parkhood: “The theme of ‘Human Writes’ gave us poets a chance to provide the crowd with a piercing glimpse into the realities faced by South Africans. I was a bit emotional when I went on the stage but once I performed my poem ‘displacement’, I felt like I had a breath of fresh air. There is a sense of release you feel when your thoughts float into the hearts of your audience. I left the doors of Tagore’s with an urge to keep on writing.”

***Do you have an old poem in your bottom drawer? Come share it with us at next week’s Poetry Grounding Session at Tagore’s (Trill Road, Observatory) on Tuesday 10th March, 8pm! The theme for this session will be ‘Fire and Rebirth’, featuring the award-winning and beloved poet Kyle Louw. A magical night that should not be missed!
